Now I know what a university student is like. In April, I knew nothing. It was hard to get used to take Keihan train, it was hard to give a presentation for the first time, and it was really hard to read the novel in English. Especially the second semester was tough, with lots of presentations, and lots of reading and writing. But now I'm proud of myself that I did all the work! Don't you think we worked as hard as we could?
Now we know how to write essays, some difficult vocabularies, and read and think critically and many other things. I believe that everything Adam taught us through the year will be useful for the next year and furture times when we studyabroad or go somethere or do something. I would like to thank Adam for teaching us tons of things.
Thank You!!! Otsukare!!

Going To Italy

After the second semester is over, I'm gonna have a trip to Italy with my friend. Pizza and pasta to be eaten for sure though. Oh and also I don't know any Italian so I'm worried about it. All I can say is delicious in Italian. Buono!! Both making requests and using speech patterns seem to be related with Japanese cultural way of speaking.
Since it is always important to be polite when people ask others for something or to do something in Japan, neither men nor women demand it but they use words such as “can you,” “could you,” and “please” to show their respect. Women might use “could you” and “please” at the same time to make very respectful sentence while men use less of those words but still, men like women, try to be polite when they need to make requests. The importance of such indirectness in Japan makes Japanese people say “sort of,” “a bit,” or “kind of” so often. By using “sort of,” “a bit,” or “kind of” and making the sentence unclear, they do not have to make their statement strong. Usually Japanese people do not like to disagree with others and they are sometimes scared of being against others, so using these phrases is a good way to state their opinions without disagreeing with others but also completely agreeing. I saw many women saying “very,” “really,” or “much” but less men in the United States, but not only women but also men use intensifiers in Japan.

hw 4 scott - also a new posting is down there so don't miss it!!!

What if I had to live with a gay woman for 30 days? I would probably be so confused at first and then I would think that it might be interesting.
I thought Ryan, who is such a typical American guy, wouldn’t really get along with Ed but for the first day, they seemed alright. It must be very difficult when two people who have completely different, opposite thoughts about something have to live together. Ryan’s attitude kind of impressed me when he insisted his opinion that homosexuality is wrong in front of 12 gay men. If I were him in that situation, I would be scared to be against them and pretend like I don’t care or I don’t disagree with homosexuality. Well, that was the part which I thought was interesting as I was watching this show because Ryan kept his mind and hardly changed it for over a half month. But as time goes by and Ryan learns more deeply about homosexuality, he thinks more about it and also more about the Bible where his all strong belief came from. Penny says the Bible is too strict, literal, which I think it’s true, and everything in the Bible is not always right. I convinced how religion can take people deeply by watching Ryan. What is so great about believing one thing deeply? Since I technically don’t believe in any religions, I didn’t understand why Ryan was so stubborn about the Bible.
I think there’s no problem with being a gay if the person wants to and s/he thinks that’s the right way for him/her to live. Compared to normal people, gay people must have tough life. First it starts with doubting themselves, then they have to pass the hardest part, coming out. After that, they are discriminated by people just because they only can love people with the same sex. Although homosexuality is considered to be a minor subject, there are actually so many gay people all over the world and there’s even a town whose population is almost gay men and women, like Castro, so I don’t think it’s minor any more, I mean, it’s getting major that many people are coming out about it and also the law that allows gay marriage. You don’t know how many exact people are gay, there should be more because some might be keeping it secret. Gay population and straight population today might be even.

Winter Break

Have you thought about what you are gonna do in winter break? There’s Christmas, New Year, and for me, there’s also a coming-of-age celebration. It’s a holiday to have a celebration for people turned or will turn 20 years old in that year. Why is it 20 years old? Because in Japan, when you turn 20 years old, you are considered to be an adult and you are allowed to drink and smoke and of course you are expected to behave like an adult. Since I’m turning 20 this month, I get to go to the celebration. Usually girls dress up in fabulous kimonos and guys wear suits or hakamas which is formal kind of kimonos for the guys. I'll put the picture of me and my friends in kimono after this celebration so that you understand what I am talking about. What's YOUR plans??? Going back to your hometown? Some trip? Snowboarding?

My frind Yo---Parallel structure

Since we have studied to write parallel structure sentences in writing class, I would like to put my work on here. I hope you (and Yo will like this.

My friend Yo

My friend Yo pines for animal’s fur
My friend Yo eats sweet bread every morning before class starts
My friend Yo is easy to get irritated
My friend Yo is good at writing essay
My friend Yo has really nice eyelash
When we met for the first time in a classroom,

she asked me if she could borrow a pen.

Yes, she forgot a pen on the very first day of her university life.

Super Size Me

Everything I saw in the United States was not big, humongous, and what proved it was this movie, “Super Size Me.” Eating nothing but McDonald’s for 30 days straight is the concept of this movie and most people would probably think that the idea was nuts! Of course I was one of them but actually I was kind of interested to see what was going to happen. This crazy guy, Morgan Spurlock, really ate McDonald’s for 30 days and what he did was amazing! If I were him, I would probably give up so I was impressed by his spirit of trial. Overall, I want to say “good job!” to him.

The fact of obesity in the US is just surprising, 37% of Americans are carrying too much fat and 2 out of every 3 adults are overweight or obese. Fat people are rarely seen in Japan and I knew that there were a lot of fat people in the US, but still I was astonished. What is going to happen if the situation just goes on??? It is very scary just to think about it. So I think what Morgan did was really meaningful and made the world reconsider about eating fast-food regularly and also made the company reconsider having such huge portions of food. In fact, McDonald’s eliminated the super size from their choice after the movie went out which is good for them. He clarified to all Americans, all over the world, the things that would happen to those who love fast-food and just keep eating them. From now, I, myself, will watch how often I eat fast-food so I want you who are reading this posting to be careful, too! Not too much Mickey D’s!

By the way, the theme song of this movie, “Super Size Me” has been STUCK in my head. I was sick of it first, but now I like it and I find myself singing it anytime, anywhere. You can download it if you search for “Super Size Me” with your device which I suppose is illegal! But give it a try!! Lyric is funny, it goes: Super-size, super-size, the American way, throw it down, throw it down, all day everyday~♪♪ like this, and you can hear the rest when you download it.

A personal posting,,

Excuse moi, Ayumi, how come I'm not a member of your blogg.. something!? When Japanese say “Please be quiet” in Japanese, the positive way they say is “Sizuka ni site kudasai.” If you eliminate “kudasai,” then it just means “Be quiet” and becomes a little negative. You can see “kudasai” works just like “please” in English. The most negative way to say “Please be quiet” in Japanese is either “Urusai” or ”Damare” which means “Shut up” in English and usually the exclamation mark goes with it. As it is important to use “please” to be polite in English, “kudasai” also roles the important part of the sentence in Japanese and it makes your language gentle and clean.

HW Assignment

What Is Intelligence?

#1. Why is society interested in your intelligence and schooling?
When you write your résumé to get a job, you usually have to write which schools you graduated, where you have worked, and the degrees you have. You might think this way: are these information really important? Why do the employers need them? The reason why society is interested in your intelligence and schooling is to know what kind of person you are. Schooling is not all about studying, but your intelligence in many aspects. Simply, well-educated person is better than uneducated person. Again education includes not only studying but also how to behave, how to understand the other’s feeling, I mean, it could be anything you have learned in your school days. Of course there are many other ways and things to perceive who you are, but knowing your intelligence and schooling could be part of it.

#2. How has your education affected your intelligence?
AS I just mentioned, education could be anything that you’ve been taught and learned in school and at home. The basic subjects I have taken in school such as Japanese, math, history, science, English, music, art, gym, and so on do help me to live in society as a normally educated person. It is difficult to be a grown-up without finishing compulsory education and the knowledge you have learned, are very useful in many situations. As I have got knowledge of the things in school and at home, I expand them into wisdom.

#3. What is emotional intelligence?
Hmmm this is a tough question, so I would like to hear other’s pinions. I think emotional intelligence is about one’s feeling and sense. When you are sad, you know how to cry and when you are happy, you know how to laugh. Expressing your feeling is important to communicate with people and if you are emotionally intelligent, you might know how you can control your feeling and the actual behavior, so that the mood doesn’t get bad. I would say that it is connected with communication. Being emotional, but not too be emotional is the smart way to live in a society.

GAIDAI FESTIVAL

Here We Are!
Me and my friends went to the university festival today. People who commute to school everyday must know that sometimes it's really crowded and sometimes, it's not, and also it depends which car you get in. Well I only needed to spend 20 munites in that train so I was just being patient. Then it happened only a minute before arriving at Osaka. I started reeling, didn’t feel like I was breathing, and was kind of losing consciousness. I had no idea what was happening, but trying not to fall was all I could do. The train arrived at Osaka and I got out of the train with half-unconsciousness and sat down. I could say that I certainly felt the blood was coming up to the head from the bottom of my body, and then I realized, “oh, I was short of oxygen.” Anyway, this is what happened this morning and I’ve been telling this story to everyone, but I waned to say this on here, too.
well my message is: be careful with the crowded train!!

50 FIRST DATES

What if your boy/girlfriend keeps forgetting you and never remembers you??
Henry Roth, who works at aquarium in Hawaii and is an island fling, meets this woman when he steps into the café to have breakfast on Sunday morning. Lucy Whitmore, who makes an interesting house out of waffle and it just makes Henry get attracted. Since Henry dates with women for only short terms, he is worried about Lucy who is a local girl so that she might want to be with him for a long time. But there is a bigger problem than what Henry is worried about; Lucy had a really bad car accident that caused her short-term memory loss. The time has stopped from a year ago, on the day she had an accident. She spends everyday as Sunday in October about a year ago and never notices the fact because her family and staff in café try not to make her day screwed up. Henry gets to know all of these facts and starts trying to do something that may be able to make her change little by little. Henry tries with the video as a flashback of what happened and what Lucy has missed. As they continue this, they fall in love almost everyday. Isn’t it really amazing that Henry can make Lucy fall in love with him new single day? I really felt that love can do anything. However, Lucy is different everyday. One day, Lucy comes to Henry to break up with him. If he was with Lucy forever, then there would be no future, this is why Lucy wants to break up with him. Why she knew about him? Lucy has kept her journal since she started watching the video that Henry made. Now Lucy wants to erase the memory of Henry and Henry helps to do it, like they have even never met.
Afterwards, Henry cannot help forgetting her and goes to see her. Lucy of course has no idea who Henry is, but she tells him that he has been in her dream. They get married and even though Lucy’s memory never comes back, I guess they will be together forever.

BANZAI!!

BANZAI is one of the common gestures in Japan. You put your hands over your head and say “BANZAI!!” You could put your arms all the way up or you could also bend your elbows to make a little BANZAI. People usually do it less than 3 times, once or twice is common.

BANZAI represents joy so you cannot do it unless you are smiling. People usually do it to express their overjoyed feelings when they or someone else win something. For example, elementary, junior high, and high schools in Japan have the athletic festivals every fall to enjoy the season and sports. Students are divided into two teams of RED and WHITE and play all kinds of athletics like running race, tug-of-war, and so on. After all their athletics and games are done, they stand in line and hear which team has won. When people who have won hear a speaker says “The winner! RED!!(Or WHITE),” and then they raise their arms and shout “BANZAI! BANZAI! ”
Since the exam is a really big deal in Japan, people often do and say “BANZAI” when they pass it.
It is like “YEAHHH” in English, people also say “YATTAA” instead of “BANZAI.” Actually, “BANZAI” is getting old and “YATTAA” might be much popular now especially among young people.

HW 4 SCOTT

#1 React for "30 Days"

I didn't know that America had such number of people who are suffering with poverty. America IS one of the richest countries in the world then why ar ethere so many poor people? Money is not everything but it is a big part of our lives that we need. In the show "30 Days" I saw in class, it showed how difficult to work minnimum wage. Minnimum wage workers maku only about $50 a day and it seems like a good deal for students like me but for the serious workers, not at all. They work a full day and they only get paid about $50. I cannot imagine if I would have to do that because I am going to have to pay for the rent, food, and everything. From this show, I convinced how happy I am right now, I mean, wasting food, money, everything I do, I feel guilty. Also I do not understand why the US Gov. treats poor people so badly. They are the citizens of the US, they should help them out.

#2 What if I could live by myself near the school, like some of my friends?

I had always wished I could live by myself near the school so I won't have to spend 2 hrs all the way from my house to school everyday. But the problem is, what am I gonna eat? Who is gonna do my laundry? I'll be watching TV all alone everyday? Then I though, it might be tough for me. I wont be able to learn the importance of the family unless I leave them for a while. So if I do that for 30 days and when 30 days has passed, I'll be like "Home Sweet Home!"

HW for Scott

It's about the hurricane Katrina which had hit America terribly.
What is your reaction to this news segment and the issues that were raised in it?
What happened in New Orleans was just horrible and I couldn't believe it.
I thought that the situation was similar to the one when a huge earthquake hit Kobe, Japan, in 1995. More than 5,500 people had died because no one was ready for such a big disaster. After the earhquake, the situation was just like how it is now in New Orleans. People had no place to live, no food to eat, and no water to drink or take shower. However, there were not any problems about race or class in Kobe. This time in America, problems of race and class have greatly showen up because of this disaster and it's devastating.
I believe in this phrase which people often say, "everything happens for a reason."
If it is true, why did this terrible disaster happen? The answer could be a lot of things but I guess it happened for the perception of people who has made mistakes for a long time. How long have people in the US been fighting about the race, especially between blacks and whites, and their fight never ends. I really hope that people notice something this time and the things will get better.

A Live Concert

I went to the live concert of a Japanese band called B'z!!
That's like the best rock band in Japan, if you don't know them, you better listen to their music! I'd been looking forward to going to this live for a long time and finally yesterday was the day. It was at the Osaka Dome. Me and my friend went shopping before that and we got bunch of clothes for the fall+winter. ohhhI'M BROKE!! But it was exciting, and what more exciting was the LIVE!! It was soooooooooo fun!!! We were singing so out loud, clapping out, and screaming out during the show! We were all sweaty but who cares, we just enjoyed the time there.
I love going to the live concert, I went one in May, too. It was my favorite artist, YUKI's.
I so wanted to go see Black Eyed Peas in Tokyo on Friday but I couldn't.. What do you want to buy?
I would say that money can buy whatever I want that are objective which does make me happy. All the girls, at least me and my friends around me, are dying to want the things such as clothes, hats, shoes, accessories, cosmetics, and so on. Those desires are just endless for ever, but I do know that money does not bring me happiness which is associated with love, friendship, and romantic relationship. These come out from our human nature and are also what people want for ever.

② How does your family contribute to your happiness?
For me, family is the most important people in the world than anybody. They are the closest people around me and also the ones who love me and whom I love. How they make me hapy is really simple and easy; when I get home, they are there and say "hi" to me or when I wake up in the morning and go into the living room, they say "good morning" to me. I think that these very normal and simple things are the bottom of being with the family and when you lose them, you will notice how important those things are and what the family means to you.

③ What is your vision of a satisfying job?
There are three things that I think are considered to be the resorces of a satisfying job which you may agree, too. First, it is what you do. If your job is not what you want to do, everyday is going to be really tough. Even though you do not like your job, at least you should be interested in what you do at work. If your job is what you love and want to do and even it was your dream since you were little, that would be perfect. Secondly, people you work with are really important. Especially boss, who should not be lack of intelligence, is who trusts you and of course whom you got to trust. Also the other workers and you should be motivated each other, and have good relationships. At last, this is we all care about, money. It is very wonderful that you can work with your favorite subjects, but I would not want to get paid less than I need so money matters to me with a satisfying job.

One day..

A couple of weeks ago, me and my friend, Lingfang, went out for lunch at HEP FIVE in Osaka. We were so ready to eat om-rice which is like omelet and fried buttered or ketchup rice is in it, but at the om-rice store, there was a long line! So we decided to eat something else and came up with pasta. Here's a silly picture of us eating pasta. After that, we went shopping a little bit and got some nice accessories. I had to leave early because I had to work at night but it was good to see her. We'll be back in school in less than two weeeeeeeeks!! Who's ready? Why is it too freakin' hot in summer in Japan? I think it wasn't like this before, like a couple of years ago. It just started recently. Anyway, I had a great time over there. I have talked about this cute black doggy in my speaking class so some of my classmates might remember, but this is her! Chloe! You can tell how cute she is by lookin at this picture but if you see real Chloe, you're so going to love her! Now look carefully where her left arm is on. You see what she's doin? see, she is sitting on the couch, putting her left arm on an armrest. Isn't it wicked cute? She always sits like that and I just love when she does that.
I'm sure lots of you have the dogs, well not only doggies but I also would like to hear about your pets.

I Made It!!

Finally I got here, the United States!
My flight was ok, it took about 14 hours to get to Boston. First I arrived in Chicago from Osaka and I was going to leave there to Boston about 6 o'clock. I got on the plane and I thought the plane was taking off soon but...there was something wrong with the oil or engine or something so I got stuck in the plane for 2 and a half hours. I was supposed to arrive in Boston at 9:46 pm but guess what time I got there? @11:30 pm. Then I was getting my baggage and looking for my host mom and...blah blah blah...I got home at 2 in the morning.
But it was really nice to see my host family again.
I'm gonna have lots of fun here!!

The Last Day of School

Today was the last day of school. NOW WE ARE FREE!!!! Yeahhhhhh
In my IES class, we brought some snacks and drinks(not alcohol cuz it was in school), played a game, and you know, had kind of a party. I'm so excited! I'll visit my host family and friends where I stayed 2 years ago. I stayed a town called "Medway" which is in Massachusetts and it's about 30 minuits away from Boston. I don't think I've talked about my experience there so I'll talk about it over this summer vacation. My brother is coming with me this time, he's so excited as well, cuz this is his first time going abroad. And I know some of my friends in my class are going away from Japan, too. Mina and Rami are going to the US as well, Haruka is going to Brazil, Linlin is going to China, Nana is going to Cambodia(don't know how to spell??), Nozomi is going to Germany...Akihiro is going to Canada, I heard, Adam is going to Mexique(in French)...and guess what? What is dim sum? Dim sum is a Chinese meal that is more of a style of eating than any one particular dish- yamucha in Japanese. Dim sum foods are steamed or fried dumplings, filled buns, noodles and so on. Those are really good! yam!
And pasta+ sweets buffet was awesome, too! We had salad, pasta, sandwiches, cakes, ice creams, and drinks... A LOT! Another thing is that I left my bag at ramen noodle store and I noticed about it when I got to the station and almost missed the last train. I ran ran and ran. So tired.
On Friday, I was supposed to wake up @5:30 but it was 7:00 when I got up, of course I was 10 min late for class at the first period. AND after my friends and I had lunch at the cafeteria, I had to carry all of the dishes that we used to return them. I fquirnsted thee and be menolone."
They habtenzed together forever.

I don't think it's a poem, it's kind of short nonsense story I think, oh well,
I gotta go to class now! thanks for reading!
Bye

An Awful Accident

I'm sure all of you know what happened in Amagasaki, Hyogo yesterday.
(For people who have no idea what I'm talking about- yesterday the train ran off the tracks and rushed into the apartments. There were about 580 people in the train, more than 70 people were killed and most of people got injured. Some people are still stuck in the train. The cause of this train wreck is considered to be driver's mistake.)
When first time I heared about the news, I was like "oh really?" and you know, I was just thinking about it as someone else's thing even though that happened sort of in the area where I live. I didn't think that was that huge accident. I saw the news on my way home and I was just shocked. That was devastating. The picture could tell how horrible it must have been.
And now, some are mad, some are sad, and some are scared. I feel all of them.
I mean if I would have lost someone who I know, I would never forgive JR(the name of company) and might even sue for them.

What do you think of this train wreck? What if people who you know would have died?
How do you think JR could get people's trust back? I don't think a president of a company quiting a company doesn't really do nothing with it.

click on the title if you'd like to know more specific info about this.

FRENCH

☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
What languages have you learned?

I'm sure that Japanese students have learned or are still learning English, so am I,
and also I'm learning French at Kansai Gaidai University.
I'm sort of addicted to it cuz I really like how it sounds and it's actually fun to speak.
I thought it might be hard to learn another language except for English as a third language, but it's not that hard.
